I am a passionate, life-long learner. My many skill sets coalesce around health and wellness. I have worked professionally in the health and wellness field for 25 years, first as a yoga teacher, then as a nurse and, finally, I added in massage therapy with a specialization in Manual Lymphatic Drainage. I have been privileged to experience and follow many paths of healing.
I started my career with a decade of teaching yoga. As a life-long learner, I always want to dive deeper and learn more, so in my thirties, I returned to school to get a nursing degree at UNC-Chapel Hill. I have had a varied nursing practice ranging from working on a behavioral health unit (where I also taught yoga) to working in a holistic medical practice, from working in a travel medicine clinic to doing private duty nursing with people in their home.
After many years nursing, I returned to school to become a massage therapist. I attended the Asheville School of Massage and Yoga where I learned with some of the best local therapists in their various specializations. I furthered these studies by attending the Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy and completed their rigorous 135 hour training in Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy to become a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. To complement that knowledge, I completed the Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Recovery Treatment Training Program with the Aftercare Academy.
I weave a beautiful tapestry with this intertwined knowledge and experience. I have a unique skill set with my background in yoga and nursing and my training in lymphatics combined with my skills as a massage therapist. It is a wide knowledge base to draw on in working with clients to help improve their health and wellness.
Massage and bodywork are among the tools that can move us from the sympathetic state (where we stay as a culture) over to the parasympathetic nervous system, releasing anti-inflammatory and restorative neurochemistry in the body. This is where healing occurs, yet in our fast-paced, stressed out world we treat relaxation as a luxury. The parasympathetic nervous system is our natural restoring system and manages the body’s rest, digest, growth and repair processes. Our bodies literally have to be in a state of relaxation (with the parasympathetic nervous system activated) to access our healing abilities.
My work supports relaxation as a path to healing and allows us to develop trust in our own bodies' innate power to heal. I am honored to work with others on their wellness journey.
